The Roman civilization was born. It was a pagan, polytheistic civilization that originated in Italy and spread across Europe, Central Asia, and Africa. It lasted until the 5th century CE and completely disappeared in 1453 with the fall of Byzantium.
Like Hindus, Romans were also culturally rich polytheists.
135 BCE to 66 BCE:
Numerous wars took place between the Romans and Jews. The Romans defeated the Jews, captured Israel, and renamed it Philistine, after a native tribe of the area.
4 BCE:
Jesus Christ was born.
1st Century CE:
Christianity began spreading and reached the Roman Empire.
98–117 CE:
Roman Emperor Trajan banned Christianity, and from this point, the concept of crypto (secret) began.
Christian missionaries started working covertly, secretly converting Romans to Christianity.
The converts were instructed to hide their Christian identity while continuing to spread the faith.
Roman emperors remained unaware and could not imagine that a religion could spread in this manner.
Constantine: The Biggest Twist
The story took a major turn when Constantine became Emperor of the Roman Empire (306–337 AD).
Constantine was a Crypto Christian.
He was the son of a Roman army officer, Flavius Constantius, who married a Greek woman named Helena—unaware that she was a Crypto Christian.

Over the next 150 years, the Roman civilization—a powerful, culturally rich empire—was completely converted to Christianity.
The Greco-Roman polytheistic traditions disappeared, and the empire fell.

Crypto Christianity in India
Crypto Christianity arrived in India during British rule. It is believed that many prominent figures remembered as social reformers were actually Crypto Christians.
