Kumbh – The Largest Festival on Earth

World’s Oldest Religious Pilgrimage Festival, Deeply Rooted in Human Civilization

Celebrated by Hindus, it takes place in four sacred cities in India, with each city hosting the event once every 12 years.

Let’s Dive into the Details

Philosophical Meaning

  • Kumbh means Pot: In Hinduism, the universe is envisioned as a pot. They use the Clay, Pot, and Space analogy to explain the universe. Hindus believe the world is made up of two things: spirit and matter. Kumbh is the festival where one seeks spiritual powers to understand this philosophy.

Spiritual Meaning

  • The origin of the Kumbh festival is related to the story of Samudra Manthan.
  • It is said that deities and demons jointly carried out the Sea Churning (Samudra Manthan). This work continued for 12 divine days, where one divine day equals one human year.
  • After these 12 days, a pot full of nectar emerged, and four drops fell at Haridwar, Prayag, Nasik, and Ujjain.
  • Hindus believe that by dipping in the sacred river, chanting, and meditating at these four places during specific astronomical alignments, one can achieve enlightenment. This is the essence of Kumbha.

Timing of Kumbh

  • The timing of the Kumbh festival is determined by the astronomical positions of Jupiter, the Sun, and the Moon:
    • Prayag: When the Sun is in Capricorn and Jupiter in Taurus.
    • Nasik: When Jupiter, the Sun, and the Moon enter Cancer on a lunar conjunction (Amavasya).
  • Ujjain: When Jupiter is in Leo (Simha rashi) and the Sun in Aries.
  • Haridwar: When Jupiter is in Aquarius (Kumbha rashi) and the Sun in Aries (Mesh rashi).
  • Jupiter spends one year in each zodiac sign, completing a cycle every 12 years, which dictates the frequency of the Kumbh in each city.
  • The interval between Kumbh Mela at different cities varies due to Jupiter’s movement:
    • From Taurus to Cancer, it takes 2-3 years, so Nasik’s Kumbh follows Prayag’s after this period.
    • From Cancer to Leo, it’s about one year, making Nasik’s and Ujjain’s Kumbh occur within a year of each other.
    • From Leo to Aquarius, it takes six years, so Haridwar’s Kumbh follows Ujjain’s after six years.
    • Prayag’s Kumbh comes three years after Haridwar’s, continuing the cycle.
  • At Prayag and Haridwar, an Ardh Kumbh is also held six years after the main Kumbh.

Hindu Dharma and Kumbh

  • Hindu dharma is a diverse religion with numerous sects, traditions, and monastic orders (akhadas). Kumbh serves as a meeting point for all streams of Hinduism.
  • The significance of Kumbha can be understood from the fact that many Hindu saints, who live secluded lives in the Himalayas and rarely appear in public, attend Kumbh.

Akhada Snan

  • An Akhada is a traditional organization or sect of ascetic monks or renunciates, focused on spiritual training, physical discipline, and promoting religious teachings.
  • Akhadas are pivotal in preserving and promoting Hindu dharma and culture during the Kumbh Mela, where they lead the Shahi Snan (royal bath), the festival’s most auspicious ritual.
